Triangles Project- Great Salt Lake, Utah- USA

Location: Northern Shore, Great Salt Lake, Utah

Triangle Depression Center Coordinates
Latitude: 41.2 Longitude: -112.9

ASTERVNIR image taken from the USGS online archives,
May 2001.

Original ASTER VNIR image
Acquisition Date: May 2001

Upon further inspection of the image data, it can be seen that there are 2 triangular depressions on the banks of the Great Salt lake, each oriented towards the same direction. The area where the triangles are located is called the Mud Flats region according to the USGS 1997 topographic map. The straight line to the South of the Mud Flats region is the Southern Pacific line. This area may have been converted to a reservoir since the creation of the topo map due to the absence of an explanation for the boundary line feature encompassing the two triangles.

The image to the right is another ASTER image of the smaller triangular depression.

ASTER VNIR image acquisition date: October 2003

The triangles can also be seen in the Landsat 7 ETM image to the left. The image was acquired in May 2003. In this image the triangle on the left looks to be identical in size to the large triangle on the right in the red square.
